Redbud, Rising Sun
Cercis canandensis “Rising Sun”

If only one color could be used to describe the leaves on this new introduction, it would be gold, but actually the leaves on this new redbud are peach, light orange, soft yellow, tangerine, and gold all at the same time. Stunning! The leaves are the standard heart-shaped as on other redbuds, but a lot of the similarity seems to end at that point. Rising Sun has been field tested in USDA Zones 6 through 9 for hardiness. The colors remain bright throughout the summer heat, even in full sun -- and with no sun scorch.

This vigorous plant can be sited in full sun, but glows as an understory reaching 10 to 12 feet at maturity. The same sweet rose-colored blooms appear before the foliage in the spring and the new leaf growth appears as golden from the start. The bark provides winter interest with a soft yellowish-orange color. The blooms are highly attractive to bees and butterflies and the foliage will be a stand-out in the Texas garden.
