Maple, Shantung
Acer truncatum

The Shantung is resistant to drought, air pollution, and browsing mammals; yet, it has received two awards from the US National Arboretum as "Most Ornamental Landscape Tree of 2000" and recognition for stunning fall color in the landscape. Growth rate is relatively fast, but it does not reach the mature height of most other maples, reaching only 18 to 20' at maturity. It is a small tree with Sweetgum-like leaves and dark bark. This is a tough tree that can take diverse soils, diverse moisture levels and a wide range of temperatures from hot to cold. It is viable throughout USDA zones 5 through 8b.
