Maple, Paperbark
Acer griseum

This maple is one of the many cultivated maple sought for its peeling coppery-red bark. The dark green leaves can serve as an exceptional shade tree in a site that gets little afternoon sun. Leaves turn scarlet and orange for a brilliant fall display beginning soon after the first cold snap. The Paperbark Maple has a much tougher constitution and viability than generally acknowledged. It rivals the Ginkgo for its exceptional adaptability to street and residential conditions, compacted, clay soil, bark abrasions that so often occur in the landscape, heat, drought and overall neglect. This is an aristocratic tree and should be used more often in Texas as an understory where it can contribute greatly to the residential landscape. It is viable across USDA zones 5-8b.
