Madrone, Dwarf
Arbutus unedo “Compacta”

Dwarf Madrone is an exceptional choice for the residential garden and can be used as an evergreen specimen or sited into a privacy hedge. Sometimes this plant is referred to as Dwarf Strawberry Tree, as a reference to the red strawberry-appearing fruit that appears in the fall. Somehow, this name seems highly inadequate for this beautiful ornamental, which is actually more of a shrub because it does not often grow taller than 6' and is most often as wide. The branches are upright and grow densely. In the spring, there are masses of white flowers. Sometimes, it is difficult to see the blossoms for all of the bees! Like most of the madrones, Dwarf Madrone can tolerate poor soil, but demands well-drained soil. Once established, water only occasionally in extreme heat or drought. The plant does best in full to partial sun and should receive at least 8 hours of sun daily. It is hardy in USDA zones 7 through 9 and is being field-tested now for viability in zones 6. Dwarf Madrone is listed as a Fire Wise Selection of USDA.
