Banana, Basjoo
Musa “Basjoo”

Basjoo is the most popular banana cultivar planted in American gardens and we are grateful to the Japanese for its development. It is also called Japanese Fiber Banana because it was originally developed to assist the garment industry but proved to be extremely cold-hardy as a landscape plant, earning the more famous name of Cold-Hardy Banana.

It is considered viable in USDA Zones 6b through 10b. In Texas, plant in full sun, but keep moisture available during the dry periods. The Basjoo will bloom repeatedly and produce light yellow or cream blooms throughout warm weather. It is said to reach 20' in tropical climates. Plan for 12 to 15' in Central Texas and give it plenty of room to grow. One banana tree can grow across and 8 to 12' area. Plant this banana for foliage and you will not be disappointed!

Useful for fiber. The fruit of Basjoo are not edible.
