Originally a tropical, edible vine, this is one of the only spinach like greens we can grow through the hot summers in central Texas. Makes beautiful deep purple and green vines that will climb anything nearby or trail along the ground. Clusters of small white and yellow flowers attract bees and can be pinched off for a delicious salad garnish. Leaves can be picked from the vine and eaten fresh all summer. Good raw in salads. Also tasty sautéed, for example, with chopped chili peppers, onions, and mustard oil. Grows well in tropical regions; thrives in warm rainy periods. Prefers a small amount of shade but will tolerate full sun. Tolerates infertile soils. Vines are visually appealing and can be trained to climb over doorways.
